A PostScript version of the paper, when one was provided by the author, can also be found in the papers subdirectory. Paper filenames in this subdirectory correspond to the alphanumeric identifier assigned by PIMRC which can be found listed next to the paper listing in either the subject or author indexes. In those cases where PDF version does not produce correct output, please use the PostScript version for better results. For example, LaTeX generated pdf files may not display properly on Macintosh screens, but the printed output displays correctly. Installation: Acrobat Reader+Search The acroread directory contains a sub-directory specific to your platform which includes the Adobe Acrobat 3.0 Reader+Search software recommended for viewing the contents of this CD-ROM. Brief instructions for installing this viewing software onto your hard disk follow. Please see the README file accompanying the Acrobat Reader for more information. The Acrobat Search Tool plug-in has been included with the installation disks. Macintosh Version: Run the RInstall Acrobat Reader 3.0S program in [CD-ROM drive]://acroread/mac/reader+search/reader System Requirements: Macintosh computer with 68020 (Macintosh II series) or greater processor (including all Power Macintosh computers). MacOS 7.0 or later. 3300 KB application RAM for 680x0-based Macintosh or Power Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned on; 5227 KB for Power Macintosh with Virtual Memory turned off, 8 MB hard disk space, plus 4.4 MB additional temporary disk space available during installation. Microsoft Windows Version: For Windows 3.x systems: Run [CD-ROM drive]:\acroread\win\16BIT\SETUP.EXE from the Program Manager or File Manager. For Windows 95 or NT systems: Run [CD-ROM drive]:\acroread\win\32BIT\SETUP.EXE and follow the onscreen instructions. System Requirements: Requires a 386-, 486-, or Pentium(R)-based processor, Microsoft Windows 3.x or greater, 4 MB application RAM, and 5 MB hard disk space, plus 7 MB additional temporary disk space available during installation. Unix Version: For installation instructions, see the INSTGUID.TXT file in the [CD-ROM drive]:/acroread/unix directory. The Acrobat Reader+Search install script is: acroread/unix/INSTALL. Navigation: Page Display & Session History Welcome.pdf links to author and session indexes for the PIMRC 1998 proceedings as well as to introductory information about the conference. To help facilitate navigation, acrobat documents on this CD-ROM are initially displayed with a bookmark menu along the lefthand side. Toggling between displaying the page alone, with bookmarks, or with thumbnails is done by choosing among the three leftmost buttons on the toolbar. Clicking with the mouse over the items in the bookmark or thumbnail menus opens the selected file or page into the document window. Acrobat Reader records a session history of which documents the user has viewed, and this path can be retraced at any time by using the two double-arrow buttons on the toolbar. Document Navigation & Page Layout The Acrobat Reader toolbar provides three viewing sizes for the text; these are 100% magnification, fitting the entire page in the viewing window, and fitting the page width in the viewing window. Most documents on this CD-ROM default to the latter. Magnification can also be adjusted using the status bar at the bottom of the Reader window or the zoom button on the toolbar. Zooming in requires just clicking on the toolbar button; for zooming out, hold down the keyboard control key (or option key on a macintosh) while clicking the mouse in the document window. Similar to the zoom button, many of the toolbar commands can also be found either in the pull-down menus at the top of the page or in the status bar along the bottom of the document. For example, to adjust the default magnification for Reader's viewing options go to File > Preferences > General and setting the Max Fit Visible magnification to different value, say, 200. For more viewing control, investigate these options in the Online Help provided by Acrobat Reader. Search and Indexes: This CD-ROM comes with a combined full text index for all the included material. The index file is in the directory index in the CD-ROM root directory. To use the full text index, you have to do a one-time loading of the file index/index.pdx. Use Tools > Search > Indexes to obtain the dialog box for loading indexes. Use the Add button and go to the index directory in the root directory of the CD-ROM to load the index.pdx file. This dialog box can also be selected by clicking the Search icon in the toolbar and then using the indexes button.
