ECE MQP Recruiting Schedule for MQPs in Academic Year 2006-2007

Although most departments begin recruiting students for faculty-sponsored MQPs in the spring of the Junior year, many members of the ECE faculty prefer to recruit in the fall of the Junior year, so that their recruiting coincides with the recruiting schedule of off-campus projects conducted by the IGSD.

Step 1

Get a paper copy of the departmental application form from Brenda McDonald in the ECE office (or download application form pdf here and print it out).  Fill out your contact information, reference, and academic background.   Even if you missed the information session in October, you should fill out a form if you want to be considered at this stage of the MQP recruitment process.

Step 2

On the form, prioritize your preference for any of the professors and/or MQP opportunities listed in the table below.  If you don't see an MQP you like, but you know there is a professor you would like to work with, go ahead and put that professor's name on the form.

Step 3

Return the completed form to Brenda McDonald in the ECE office (AK 202) by Friday, November 11th.

Step 4

Immediately following the November 11th deadline for returning the paper applications, you will be contacted by e-mail to arrange an interview with one of the advisors you specified, depending on your project preference.  Interviews will be conducted between November 13th and November 30th.

Step 5

When all student interviews have been completed, the selected students will be notified by January 5th, 2006.  You will be asked for a commitment decision as soon as possible so students on the "wait list" can be accommodated if necessary.  You must accept or decline their invitation to join a project team by Feb. 3, 2006.

Step 6

Start your MQP in A term 2006!

Personnel Locator
This project will investigate the technical and operational practicality of a  rather simple indoor personnel location system based on signal strength  and "homing" principles.  A large-scale, absolute positioning system is  currently in the research and development phase in the ECE department.   There may also be utility for simpler devices which could be used by a search  team to help direct them to a person in trouble, possibly using a combination  of signal strength and directionality, with one or more widely spaced RF  frequencies.      Team size would be 2 or 3 students.
Needed skills include analog (and ideally RF) design experience, signal  analysis knowledge, and possibly digital design experience.

Note that some MQP advisors will allow students to apply for a specific project within their lab.  Other advisors will require that you apply for an MQP within their lab, but agree to work on whatever specific MQP is assigned to you by the faculty member.
