Research Work

I have enjoyed – and certainly been challenged by – my research activities in ultrasound. It is also rewarding when, at least potentially, the results of one’s effort can bring health care improvement or lead to new and improved sensor systems. Moreover, ultrasound research offers the opportunity to combine several fields: acoustics, communication and signal processing from electrical and computer engineering; anatomy and physiology from medicine; and fluid dynamics, optimization and wave propagation from physics and mathematics.

Background

I grew up on a farm in Denmark, where I after high school did flight radar and flight simulator work in the Danish Air Force. Following that, I studied Electrical Engineering and then worked for a year as a designer of research instrumentation. From 1972 to 1976, I was a Ph.D. student in the Bioengineering Dept. at Univ. of Utah. From 1976 on, I taught at Drexel University in Philadelphia and was active with biomedical ultrasound research. Finally, in 1987, I came to Worcester Polytechnic Institute. In addition to research and teaching, I am Center Director for the Copenhagen IQP Project Center.

Personal

I enjoy outdoor activities, such as hiking and skiing and trail building efforts. As an avocation, I am very interested in environmental preservation, biodiversity, sustainable development, and equitable distribution of resources.
